Summer Begins Within: Understanding the Fire Element
- May 4
- 2 min read
As we move into early May, we gently transition into the summer season in Traditional Chinese Medicine — a time governed by the Fire element.
The Fire element is associated with the Heart and Small Intestine, as well as the Pericardium and San Jiao (Triple Burner). Together, these systems influence not only our circulation, digestion and fluid metabolism, but also our emotional balance, connection to others and overall sense of vitality.
This is the season of joy, openness and connection: a natural outward movement of energy. When balanced, it allows us to feel present, connected, mentally clear and emotionally at ease.
When the Fire element is out of balance
In modern life, this outward energy can easily become excessive. When the Fire element is overstimulated or dysregulated, it may show up as:
inner restlessness or agitation
sleep disturbances (especially difficulty staying asleep)
overwhelm
feeling “wired” but tired
heart palpitations
difficulty focusing or mental overactivity
increased sensitivity to heat or external stimuli
From a TCM perspective, this often reflects a lack of grounding and regulation within the Heart and its related systems.
Why supporting the organs of the season matters
By consciously supporting the organs associated with the season, we help the body to adapt more smoothly to external changes.
Nourishing now the Heart, calming the mind and supporting the flow within the San Jiao allows the system to remain regulated, grounded and open at the same time.
This is not about doing more but about creating space for balance, rhythm and reconnection.
If you feel called to experience this transition in a more embodied and guided way, Vanessa Viane from Zurich Wellness and I will be holding a small, intimate workshop on May 31st.
Together, we will explore gentle movement, simple TCM principles and a deeply calming acupuncture meditation, supporting the Fire element and helping you ease into summer with more balance and clarity.
