Why “Healthy Aging” has been a lived practice in TCM for millennia

"Longevity" is THE word of the moment – in wellness magazines, specialized practices and clinics. It's about longevity, performance, "healthy aging".


But what is considered a trend today has been central to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for millennia.


Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has a concept for this: Yangsheng, which literally translates to "nourishing life." Specifically, this means nurturing body and mind before illness arises. This is achieved through everyday, conscious decisions and actions that protect and nourish our energy.


Yangsheng is not about self-optimization or "eternal youth", but about connection with one's own rhythm and with nature.


The goal is not to have more life, but to live better: with peace, clarity, and inner strength.

Yangsheng did and still does not mean luxury and does not require expensive clinic stays and supplements where we no longer really understand what they are aiming for (don't get me wrong: I am in favor of supplements if they have been specifically tested and we have a clear view of what we want to achieve).


Its roots lie in simplicity, affordability, and the everyday, which we can consciously shape:


Warmth and rhythm : warm, cooked meals support the Qi and strengthen the center; those who eat regularly give their body structure and important nutrients.

Seasonality and regionality : eating what the earth in our own surroundings currently provides harmonizes our inner rhythm with the outer world.

Mindful eating : eating leisurely and thoughtfully. Smelling, chewing, tasting calms the mind and supports digestion.

Breathing and movement : Qigong, walks, breathing exercises, treatments, mindful movements – small rituals that keep the Qi flowing.

Emotional care : Recognize emotions, address them, let them go, and if they become a burden in everyday life, definitely seek professional help.

Rest : true regeneration. Pausing for reflection.


When we live by these principles, we don't just prolong our lives, we deepen them and get to the root of the matter.
